Fortnite Gamer Raises $611,000 for Hospital in 24 Hours

Who says gaming can’t be fun AND help the greater good at the same time?
One of Fortnite’s most popular players, Benjamin “DrLupo” Lupo raised more than $611,000 for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in a 24-hour livestream at the beginning of January. That brings his donation to the hospital to more than $1.3 million over the past year.
Using the #buildagainstcancer, Lupo asked his 2.8 million fans on Twitch from 85 countries to donate while he played. “Giving back has been a huge part of who I am on Twitch ever since I started streaming,” he said. “Any opportunity I have to promote helping the greater good is something that I enjoy being a part of.”
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee is a pediatric treatment and research facility that focuses on children’s diseases. It costs about $2.4 million a day to run and there is never a cost to the patient to be treated.
St. Jude’s president and CEO, Richard Shadyac Jr. says Lupo is pioneering an innovative way of fundraising and is a leader among his gaming peers. “He is helping St. Jude continue to fight childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases.”
“One of the best parts of being a streamer is seeing communities of people form, ad working with those communities to help benefit others and leave a legacy of positivity,” Lupo says.
